Frequently Asked Questions

GLP-1 & GIP/GLP-1 Medications: Frequently Asked Questions

What does GLP-1 activation do?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a natural hormone your body releases after eating. GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone to support healthy blood sugar and help with appetite control.

GLP-1 activation may help:

  • Reduce appetite and increase fullness by signaling the brain’s satiety (fullness) centers

  • Slow stomach emptying, helping you feel full longer (especially early in treatment)

  • Support blood sugar control by increasing insulin release when blood sugar is high and reducing glucagon

What does GIP activation do?

GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) is another natural hormone released after eating. It supports how your body manages blood sugar and energy.

GIP activation may help:

  • Support post-meal blood sugar levels by boosting insulin release when blood sugar is elevated

  • Improve insulin sensitivity in some people

  • Enhance results when combined with GLP-1 activity (responses vary by person)

How do they aid in weight loss?

By supporting appetite regulation and fullness, these medications can help you feel satisfied with smaller portions and reduce overall calorie intake. When combined with healthy nutrition and activity, this can lead to steady, sustainable weight loss.

Who is a good candidate for this type of treatment?

These medications are commonly considered for individuals who:

  • Have a higher Body Mass Index (BMI), or

  • Have struggled to lose weight with diet and exercise alone, and/or

  • Need improved blood sugar support

A thorough medical evaluation will determine whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

How long does it take to see results?

Many patients notice reduced appetite within the first few weeks. Weight-loss results vary, but more noticeable changes often occur after several weeks to a few months, especially with consistent treatment and lifestyle support.

What side effects might occur?

The most common side effects are usually digestive and may include:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

These symptoms are often temporary and tend to improve as your body adjusts. We’ll review any persistent or concerning side effects during follow-ups.

How are these medications administered?

Some options are taken as:

  • Weekly or daily injections, or

  • Oral tablets (in select cases)

We’ll recommend the best option based on your goals, preferences, and medical history.

Do I need to change my diet or exercise habits?

For best results, medication should be paired with a plan that includes:

  • Balanced nutrition

  • Regular physical activity

  • Supportive lifestyle habits

We’ll help you create a personalized approach that fits your needs.

Are they safe for long-term use?

These medications are widely used and are generally considered safe when prescribed and monitored by a medical provider. Because every patient is different, we’ll review your medical history to make sure this is an appropriate option for you.

What happens if I stop taking the medication?

If medication is stopped without maintaining sustainable lifestyle habits, some weight regain is possible. That’s why we emphasize long-term nutrition and activity strategies alongside treatment.

What’s the next step?

Schedule a consultation for personalized, medically supervised weight management. We’ll review your medical history, clarify your goals, and design a tailored plan that supports long-term results.
